Freeze was already obsessed with freezing animals as a child. His parents were so shocked about his hobby that they sent him to boarding school.
In high school he met Nora, who he eventually married. After their marriage Nora became incurably ill. Freeze decided to put her in a seemingly dead state by freezing her, hoping one day to find a cure for her illness. For this freezing, Freeze used technology from the ruthless Ferris Boyle. Boyle discovered what Freeze was doing, and threw him in a barrel of chemicals. This turned Freeze herself into an ice man and from now on she can only survive in cold environments.
