Hedwig is Harry Potter's owl in J.K. Rowling's book series with the same name. Hedwig is a female snow owl. Harry gets his white snow owl, which like all owls in the magic world can deliver mail, from Hagrid for his 11th birthday. Harry gives her the name Hedwig because he came across the name in his textbook for the History of Magic.
At Hogwarts Hedwig usually stays in the Owl Wing. At night she hunts and during the day she takes a nap there together with hundreds of other owls. That's when she doesn't have to deliver mail. During the holidays she stays in a large birdcage in Harry's bedroom. Sometimes she's allowed to go outside to hunt, but uncle Herman and aunt Petunia don't like that very much, so Hedwig is regularly locked up in the birdcage.
Harry and Hedwig have a close relationship. Sometimes, when Harry is snappy with Hedwig, she reacts by biting his finger a little harder than normal, or by hitting Harry with her wing while flying away. She always seems to forget about it very quickly. She seems to understand Harry and does what he asks her to do.
When Harry (in the last book of the series) leaves Privet Drive, they are attacked by Death Doers. Hedwig doesn't survive this attack.
