The Chitauri are a powerful, technologically advanced race of alien cyborg-like beings, and they serve Thanos. They were trapped in the dead space between dimensions for centuries. The Chitauri waited, planned and built for the day their ruler would lead them back to the world of light and life. When Thanos makes an alliance with the exiled Asgardian Loki Laufeyson, the Chitauri are granted to him as his personal army to conquer Earth and obtain the Tesseract.
