Build a spooky LEGO® Halloween world with sets, minifigures and individual pieces

As soon as the days start to get shorter, pumpkins start appearing on your doorstep and every dark corner suddenly looks suspiciously like a hiding place for a skeleton, it’s time to get your LEGO® world ready for Halloween. You don’t need to build a whole haunted house from scratch to do this. With a Halloween set, a few individual minifigures and a handful of spooky parts, you’ll be well on your way.

LEGO® Halloween starts with the right set
A good Halloween world needs three things: pumpkins, something that moves unexpectedly, and at least one skeleton that really should have moved on years ago. The latest LEGO Halloween sets combine these ingredients into compact models that are perfect for playing with, displaying or building on.
With 617 pieces, the LEGO® Halloween Wreath (40825) is one of the most elaborate Halloween models. The wreath features recognisable autumn colours and all sorts of spooky details, including pumpkins, a large bat, a ghost and a spider’s web. Thanks to the cord, you can hang up the creation, but the wreath can also be used as a backdrop for a Halloween MOC.
If you’d rather not take the model apart, you can continue the same style using loose pieces. For example, build a small graveyard beneath the wreath, place a few minifigures by the door, or create a tabletop display with candles, pumpkins and black railings. In this way, a decorative LEGO wreath becomes the centrepiece of a complete Halloween scene.
The LEGO® Spooky Pumpkin Truck (40822) takes a slightly less subdued approach. The small pick-up is driven by a farmer minifigure and carries a huge pumpkin. That pumpkin can be opened so you can store a pumpkin head and a skull inside. Perfectly normal agricultural transport, then.
The truck fits perfectly into a LEGO City Halloween parade, on a pumpkin farm or next to a stall where minifigures come to collect their Halloween decorations. With extra pumpkins, bales of hay, fences and autumn plants, you can easily build a larger scene around the vehicle.
For a smaller build, there’s the LEGO® Fun Halloween Skeleton (30717). This buildable skeleton has movable arms and legs and comes with a pumpkin head and a lantern. The model is compact enough for a desk, windowsill or small Halloween village, but can also be used as a giant skeleton in a minifigure scene.
From cheerful pumpkin to dark dungeon
Not every set needs to officially feature the word ‘Halloween’ on the packaging to fit into a spooky build. Themes such as LEGO Minecraft, LEGO DREAMZzz and Wednesday contain plenty of zombies, monsters, dark buildings and strange creatures to further expand your Halloween world.
The LEGO® Altar of the Dead (40811) features a colourfully decorated skull on one side and an altar with flowers and food offerings on the other. Día de los Muertos is a distinct cultural tradition and not a variation of Halloween. Nevertheless, thanks to its skull shape, flowers and autumnal colours, the set can be placed alongside a Halloween display, provided the cultural difference is acknowledged clearly and respectfully.
Those who’d rather step straight into a dark dungeon can turn to the LEGO® Minecraft Zombie Dungeon (21587). The set includes three zombies, a slime figure and an adventurer. Thanks to the rotating chamber and falling rock, a visit to the dungeon can quickly go wrong – just as you’d expect from a dungeon full of zombies.
The blocky style of LEGO Minecraft makes the set easy to expand. With grey bricks, sand-coloured slopes, torches, bones and cobwebs, you can build extra corridors or place the dungeon beneath an existing LEGO castle.
The LEGO® DREAMZzz Nightmare Scorpion Digger (71513) adds a completely different kind of horror. The set can be built as a six-legged scorpion monster or as a biomechanical wasp. This means the model fits perfectly into a nightmare landscape, a monster laboratory or an abandoned factory.
Combine the dark colours and large legs with slime, chains, glowing parts and minifigures who would clearly rather be somewhere else. The result is a Halloween MOC that goes beyond the classic haunted house.
Individual LEGO® Halloween minifigures tell the story
An empty haunted house is just a neglected property. It’s only when the rooms are filled with skeletons, zombies, ghosts and lost visitors that a proper Halloween story unfolds. With individual LEGO minifigures, you can decide for yourself who lives in your spooky world and who’s trying to escape as quickly as possible.
The werewolf is the ideal inhabitant for a dark forest or deserted village. Place him amongst tall trees, build a small moonlit path and let an unsuspecting walker discover just a little too late why all the other minifigures went home before sunset.
The drowned zombie fits perfectly in a swamp, harbour, sewer or abandoned ship. With transparent blue pieces, seaweed and dark bricks, you can build a damp environment where the zombie slowly rises from the water.
Of course, a classic LEGO® skeleton is a must. Skeletons can be used as inhabitants of a graveyard, prisoners in a dungeon or hapless explorers who took a warning on an old treasure map a little too seriously.
Ghosts, nightmares and villains are also welcome
Not every Halloween character has to come from a classic horror film. Fantasy figures and well-known villains also work well in a dark LEGO scene.
A single LEGO® ghost fits into almost any haunted house. Hang the figure above a flight of stairs, have it appear from behind a wall, or use transparent pieces to make it float. With a small light behind the figure, the ghost creates an even greater effect in a dark room.
The Nightmare Emperor from LEGO DREAMZzz is perfect for a dark fantasy castle or an army of dream monsters. Thanks to its striking design, this minifigure can form the centrepiece of a larger Halloween display.
Dr Facilier also has exactly the right look for a mysterious scene. Place him in a dark street, add a few candles, cards and shadows, and you’ll instantly have a setting where nothing is likely to happen without a price being paid.
Create your own LEGO® Halloween minifigure
If you can’t find the right character, you can easily create one yourself. With separate heads, hats, torsos, legs and accessories, you can make a witch, a pumpkin monster, a zombie, a gravedigger or a mysterious visitor who doesn’t appear in any official set.
An orange pumpkin head with a Jack-o’-lantern pattern instantly transforms almost any minifigure into a Halloween character. Combine the headpiece with a dark costume, a cape or a simple farmer’s outfit. This way, the figure can represent either a friendly trick-or-treater or the guardian of a cursed pumpkin patch.
A black bat-like minifigure part gives a character a monstrous or nocturnal look. Add a brown LEGO® broom to that and you’ve got the basis for a witch, a magical caretaker or a particularly zealous cobweb cleaner.
For an older and dustier look, you can use a mummy headpiece. Combine this with beige, white and dark brown pieces to create a figure that’s just crawled out of a tomb.
A separate zombie head comes in handy when you want to give an existing character a less-than-fresh look. Use a tattered coat, arms and legs in different colours, and a shovel or bone as an accessory. This creates a zombie that looks as though it’s already had quite a long night.
With a separate white skeleton torso, you can also assemble your own skeleton or build a larger monster. Combine different skeleton parts and give the figure, for example, four arms, mismatched legs or a striking headdress.
Bats, cobwebs and bones complete the scene
The atmosphere of a Halloween MOC is often defined by the smallest details. A castle without inhabitants may seem deserted, but it’s only after adding cobwebs, bones and bats that it becomes clear why the building has stood empty for so long.
A single black LEGO® bat can be placed against a wall, attached to a tree or made to fly around a tower. Use several bats at different heights to add movement to the scene.
The flexible curved cobweb fits in doorways, between trees or behind an old window. As the piece is flexible and has multiple attachment points, you can also position it at an angle or curved.
With a few short white LEGO® bones, you can convey without words that a place is probably not particularly safe. Place them next to a grave, in a prison cell or at the bottom of a monster’s lair. You can also use bones as fencing, decoration, tree branches or parts of a larger skeleton.
Turn off the lights and let the details glow
Halloween is, of course, best enjoyed in the dark. However, you don’t need to switch off all the lights and then fumble around in the dark for your pieces. By combining dark colours with glow-in-the-dark or transparent parts, you can create the feel of a night-time scene, whilst keeping all the details visible.
A black rat with red eyes is a small piece that adds a lot of atmosphere. Place the rat amongst rubbish, under a staircase or next to a skull. The figure is small enough that it only catches the eye on second glance, which only enhances the effect.
The glow-in-the-dark round 1x1 plate can be used for eyes, lamps, potions or mysterious machines. Charge the piece under a light and it will give off a soft glow in the dark. A few of these tiles behind a window can instantly give a haunted house a lived-in look. Or an uninhabited look, with something still peering out.
A single LEGO® candle fits on an altar, table, windowsill or gravestone. Combine several candles at different heights and use transparent yellow, orange or green pieces as flames for a magical effect.
Build a LEGO® haunted house with loose pieces
Your own LEGO haunted house doesn’t have to be as big as a Modular Building. With a small façade, a roof, one room and a few minifigures, you can already build a convincing Halloween scene.
Use dark grey and black bricks for the walls and add damaged sections using slopes, protruding plates and uneven tiles. A steep dark grey roof tile helps to build a tall, old-fashioned roof. By slightly offsetting different roof sections, the house looks old and crooked without the entire structure actually becoming unstable.
A black spiked fence fits well around a garden, graveyard or balcony. Let part of the fence topple over, place plants between the bars and add a crooked path of tiles. This immediately gives the building an abandoned look.
The black LEGO® spade can be held by a gravedigger, but it can also be placed against a wall or amongst tools. Position the spade next to a fresh patch of dug-up earth and leave the rest of the story to the imagination.
How to build a spooky LEGO® graveyard
A graveyard is one of the simplest Halloween MOCs to build yourself. Start with a small baseplate and use dark grey bricks as gravestones. By combining slopes, round bricks and printed pieces, you can ensure that not every grave looks the same.
Make the ground uneven using dark green, olive green, dark brown and grey plates. Add small plants, bare tree branches and scattered stones. A perfectly flat lawn can easily look as though the caretaker is doing his job a bit too well. For an abandoned graveyard, nature should visibly have taken over.
Place a skeleton partly under a gravestone, let a hand protrude above the ground, or position a ghost amongst the trees. With a black fence and a few lanterns, you can create a compact scene that’s easy to place next to a LEGO building or model railway.
Turn a pumpkin patch into a Halloween story
A Halloween world doesn’t have to consist solely of black buildings and grey gravestones. Orange pumpkins, red leaves and brown earth create a colourful autumnal setting that remains appealing even outside the Halloween season.
Build a pumpkin patch with green stalks and orange round pieces of various sizes. Place the Spooky Pumpkin Truck at the edge of the patch and let minifigures collect pumpkins. Amongst all the ordinary pumpkins, you can hide one with a face. Or several, if the farmer clearly has a bigger problem on his hands.
Add a small farmhouse, hay bales, a scarecrow and a wooden fence. By day, it’s a cosy autumn scene. As soon as you place a werewolf behind the barn and hide a skeleton underground, the same MOC transforms into a Halloween tale.
Combine Halloween with LEGO® Wednesday
The dark buildings and striking characters from LEGO Wednesday fit almost effortlessly into a Halloween world. Check out the LEGO® Wednesday sets if you want to add a Gothic house, a mysterious room or a gloomy school setting.
With individual LEGO® Wednesday minifigures, you can populate existing buildings without using a complete set. Place the figures in an old country house, have Thing crawl across a table, or combine the characters with skeletons and ghosts to create your own Halloween story.
The advantage of this combination is that the build doesn’t have to be taken apart after 31 October. The gothic colours and mysterious details fit perfectly into a collection centred on Wednesday, monsters or haunted houses all year round.
Monster Fighters, Minecraft and DREAMZzz also go well with it
For classic monsters, take a look at the individual LEGO® Monster Fighters minifigures. Figures from this theme are designed for scenes featuring werewolves, vampires, ghosts and other monsters. This makes them a perfect fit for a traditional Halloween village.
LEGO Minecraft is particularly useful if you want to build a blocky dungeon, an abandoned mine or a zombie attack. Combine different LEGO® Minecraft sets and use individual bricks to add tunnels, caves and secret rooms.
LEGO DREAMZzz, on the other hand, offers a more imaginative take on Halloween. Huge nightmare creatures, strange colours and unexpected combinations of animals and machines give your MOC a look that lies somewhere between a dream and a particularly restless night.
Use the right colours for a LEGO® Halloween MOC
Black and orange are the best-known Halloween colours, but a creation made up solely of these two colours can quickly look flat. Use a variety of dark and natural shades to add more depth to the scene.
Dark grey and light grey work well for gravestones, castle walls and dungeons. Dark brown and reddish-brown are suitable for trees, earth and old wooden buildings. Olive green, dark green and sand green give plants and walls a damp, weathered look.
Use transparent green for slime and potions, transparent red for demonic eyes and transparent light blue for ghosts or magical energy. Small amounts of purple and dark red can be added to curtains, clothing and roofs.
Orange works best as a striking accent colour. A single bright orange pumpkin in an otherwise dark scene immediately catches the eye. If you place orange elements everywhere, there’s a good chance your haunted house will slowly turn into a particularly enthusiastic DIY store.
How to give your Halloween scene more depth
A good LEGO scene is more than just a collection of random spooky pieces. Divide the scene into a foreground, middle section and background. For example, place a fence and a few bones at the front, a minifigure and gravestones in the middle, and a haunted house or dark trees at the back.
Work with different heights too. A flat baseplate can be enhanced with small hills, steps, rocks and raised buildings. Have a ghost floating above the other figures and place bats at different heights around the roof.
Finally, think about the story. Why is the truck parked by the graveyard? Who left the gate open? What is the skeleton looking at, and why is everyone running away from that one pumpkin? Small clues make a MOC more interesting to look at and invite you to finish the story yourself.
Create your own Halloween MOC using loose parts
On LEGO fan sites such as Rebrickable, builders share new designs for pumpkins, ghosts, skulls, haunted houses and moving Halloween models every year. Such creations can be used as inspiration for your own design or as a starting point for a build with a parts list.
A small pumpkin can be built with just a few dozen pieces. A larger model can be fitted with a rotating mechanism, a light brick or a moving ghost. With LEGO Technic axles and gears, for example, you can make a figure appear from behind a gravestone or have a skeleton’s arm move out of the ground.
You don’t always have to recreate a MOC you’ve found exactly. Use the building technique, replace parts with colours you already have, and add your own minifigures. This way, you’ll create a Halloween model that suits your collection and the space you have available.
